Sarah Minney awarded Allegheny County Medical Society Foundation scholarship

Allegheny County Medical Society (ACMS) Foundation awarded a $4,000 scholarship to Sarah Minney, daughter of Don Minney and the late Janet Minney, of Belchertown, Mass. She is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Sarah-MinneyMinney is passionate about community service and making an impact locally.

“A major reason why I decided to specialize in family medicine is because essential to its practice is the understanding that an individual’s health does not begin or end at the physician’s office door or the entrance to the hospital,” she said. “I know that in order to best support my community and to best lead my community, I need to advocate just as much for city maintenance funding, business funding, school funding, and job growth initiatives as I do for improved health care policies and better access to health insurance.”

Minney’s extensive community service efforts have spanned the length of her collegiate career. She’s made an impact in her undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and medical school communities. During her time at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, she served as coordinator for the Family Medicine Interest Group, organizing a food drive and trip to a local food pantry, trips to several health fair screenings to provide blood pressure and diabetes education, and a family medicine networking event at a local restaurant to bring together students and physicians from the community.

In 2004, ACMS Foundation established this annual scholarship with $10,000 in seed money, which has grown to maturity thanks to generous contributions from the ACMS Foundation and local physicians. Eligibility includes status as a third- or fourth-year Pennsylvania medical student from Allegheny County; U.S. citizenship; and full-time enrollment in a Pennsylvania medical school.

The Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society is pleased to administer the fund for ACMS Foundation. ACMS’s mission is to provide leadership and advocacy for patients and physicians.

The Foundation, a nonprofit affiliate of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, sustains the future of medicine in Pennsylvania by providing programs that support medical education, physician health and excellence in practice. It has been helping to finance medical education for more than 60 years.
