How HR‑1 Impacts the Future of Medicine

Recent federal changes under HR‑1 are creating significant new barriers for medical students and aspiring physicians across the United States. These changes threaten not only individual career paths, but the strength and stability of our future health care workforce.

HR‑1 introduces several major shifts to how medical education is financed:

  • Restructuring of federal direct student loan caps

  • Elimination of Grad PLUS loans for new borrowers

  • Creation of a lifetime borrowing limit that includes both undergraduate and professional education debt

Together, these changes are limiting access to medical education and putting additional financial strain on students pursuing careers in medicine.
