When someone makes a referral and sufficient information exists to indicate that a physician might be impaired, the PHP contacts that physician to encourage appropriate assessment and treatment.
A qualified physician with experience in addiction medicine performs the assessment.
PHP often utilizes a residential facility to carry out evaluations. The PHP also has working agreements with several out-of-state facilities that perform comprehensive assessments. The PHP might refer a physician to one of these facilities if the case calls for a specialized approach or if the physician prefers to go out of state.
If an evaluator diagnoses an impairing condition, the PHP works with the evaluator to develop an individualized treatment plan for the physician.
