Contributions Grew
The Foundation extends a warm “thank you” to all individuals, hospitals, and organizations who contributed in 2007 to support Foundation programs. Gifts for the year totaled $768,738. Of that amount, $280,973 was attributed to grants, sponsorships, and PHP Endowment gifts. These gifts helped the Foundation reach 98 percent of its annual goal of $500,000.
New Donors Welcomed

Numbers Breakdown

First Donor Luncheon Arranged
To express gratitude for the support our dedicated contributors give to the Foundation, we honored them at the first donor recognition luncheon on March 31 at The Country Club of Harrisburg. In the past, the Foundation has held donor dinners, but we designed this luncheon to make it convenient for people to travel during daylight hours on the weekend.
Forty-six people attended the event, including some familiar Foundation faces: former Foundation board chair, Abram Hostetter, MD, and his wife Pat; former Foundation executive director, LeRoy Erickson and his wife Marianne; and former Physicians’ Health Programs (PHP) case management coordinator, Madlyn Orloski. Also in attendance to share the day were members of the Pennsylvania Medical Society family: Roger Mecum, Society executive vice president; Sharon Ryan, MBA, PMSCO Healthcare Consulting president and chief operating officer; Barbara Mannisi, Society Alliance president; and Maureen Callahan, Society Alliance president elect. In addition, Harvey Spector, DO, Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association president joined us for the special occasion.
Mark A. Piasio, MD, MBA, Pennsylvania Medical Society president, donated his time to be the keynote speaker. He addressed current issues in health care and stressed the importance of giving back to the physician community. Guest speaker, Sural Shah, a Penn State College of Medicine student and three-time Foundation scholarship recipient, spoke about the value of the Foundation’s financial assistance to medical students. Another guest speaker, J. Michael Moses, MD, PHP Committee chair, spoke in support of the PHP.
Traditionally, the Foundation has held the annual donor event to recognize Foundation Fellows, those who have made a planned gift; however, in recent years, we have been pleased to add premier level donors to the celebration.

Fundraiser Held
Thanks to more than 50 generous donors, the Foundation raised $6,680 at this year’s Pennsylvania Medical Society House of Delegates Meeting October 19-21 in Hershey.
The Foundation’s display booth attracted many visitors who came to make a donation, and add their names to a drawing for an iPod touch MP3 player. We extend much gratitude to the anonymous contributor who donated the iPod to benefit the Foundation’s fundraising efforts! Congratulations to the winner, Domingo T. Alvear, MD, FACS, Mechanicsburg, Pa.
On the last day of the meeting, Raymond Truex Jr., MD, FACS, Foundation board chair, had an opportunity to create awareness about Foundation services among Society delegates. His presentation, The Faces of the Foundation, displayed photos and names of Foundation donors, loan borrowers, and scholarship recipients, and quotes from anonymous Physicians’ Health Programs participants.
Foundation trustees and staff sincerely appreciate the gifts from Society members throughout the long weekend.
PHP Endowment Climbed
In 2000, Physicians’ Health Programs embarked on a campaign to establish an endowment to secure the future of the program. The endowment has continued to grow over the years, and in 2007 generous donors gave $19,328 to help the fund top $3,453,785.
Giving Options Offered
Our contributors give in many ways — here are some of the most common options:
- Annual Fund Gifts support the ongoing programs of the Foundation.
-
Major Gifts of cash and appreciated property, including securities, provide immediate funds to support and grow programs.
-
Planned Gifts, such as bequests, trusts, and annuities help a donor meet charitable and financial goals while ensuring the future of the Foundation.
-
Endowments build funds that accrue interest to provide ongoing program support.
-
Naming Opportunities allow a donor to establish a fund in his or her name to pass a legacy to the next generation.
-
Stocks, Bonds, and Mutual Funds enable a donor to support a program, earn charitable tax deductions, and receive capital gains advantages.
